3 years and now of dirty bomb

i was never in the pre alpha stages of dirty bomb like a lot of people here. so maybe some of you could explain to me some things. when i watched the alpha gameplay like this:

//youtu.be/ctLsD_jVvhc

why does this look more pleasing to the eyes the level of detail of the map and more crisp then it does today just the little things like the bomb timer or the electrical signs ect is it because it lags the maps or what?

what happened to that map? seems so interesting to play then the current one could it be added as a [extended] map maybe. I would play this map in the stopwatch mode for 20-40mins instead of searching for short unbalanced games of objective.

anyone here played the original maps and comfirm im not just the only one who thinks this or im just totally crazy outta my ruddy mind.

In the early stages of the game, they were aiming for half hour rounds, creating nearly hour long matches for stop watch. Once they were getting close to PAX 2013, they decided to change the map length to 15 minute rounds, so they cut london bridge’s escort time down as well as cutting the last objective in train yard.

The last objective in trainyard became what Market is today. Different objectives but somewhat similar layout.

The old Bridge version was excrutiatingly long. To get the EV down there for the deliver objective, it had to go past the current EV endpoint, then to the left and circle down to end up below the current EV endpoint, then ahead to the deliver objective and then the whole extra bit you saw in the video. It was a lot of EV escort

Anyway, I personally feel DB looks better now than it does in that video.

making maps is one of the most crucial things for DB to succeed. but is one of the most difficult one to make it right.
there was a time, when we saw different versions of several maps coming out almost every patch.
we had Terminal with 3 objectives
we had a Chapel with actual object inside of Chapel
we had Bridge like in the video, and also a Bridge-alt map that was awesome.

etc etc etc.

looking back i find that some of the map changes made it right, some made it wrong.
i still hope for a single good map without drawbacks, still hope for a map, that has longevity of DM6 in quake, or SUpply Depot in ET.

I quite liked the original London Bridge, but it was extremely long to play a full round, as such not good for SW, but as a standalone experience it was alright. The 2nd objective (barrier) was better than the current version, as the C4 was placed on the barrier itself, you didn’t need to blow up a generator in an easily defendable room. I’d still like to see cut down maps for 6-v-6 SW, and longer multi-objective maps for 8-v-8 Obj, I think there’s a market for both.

As for graphics, up till recently I was playing DB with graphics turned way down, because I always felt the game was laggy and assumed it was FPS lag. I recently bought a 144Hz monitor and now the game is smooth as silk, even with most graphics turned up, and the maps and Mercs look gorgeous.

What are the specs on your rig Kendle?

Not that great actually, i5 quad-core @ 3.4 Ghz, 8Gb RAM, GTX580 1Gb. By modern standards that’s not much at all, and I get 80+ FPS with what I guess are medium - high graphics (I turn off some of the things I know kill FPS but not at home at the mo’ to be able to tell you what exactly).

If I go for low graphics I can get 150+, I just turned my graphics up recently cos I was interested, and was pleasantly surprised at how nice everything looks.

Either way, the difference the 144Hz monitor has made is like night and day compared to my old 60Hz monitor, game is silky smooth all the time (my 'net is 152Mb cable and I only play on UK servers with 20-ish ping).

ps: the new monitor is still 1920 * 1080, same as the old one, I don’t think my card could cope with a higher resolution!

I have mine on the lowest video settings and get~250 FPS with my single GTX690. I may experiment with turning them up after your post.

one of the better changes was confining the maps a bit more there was too many routes that were great for sneaking around, but mostly just made them confusing and with less action.

Seeing all these old videos just makes me scratch my head and wonder why we don’t even have options for visuals like this anymore. I quite liked playing the game back then…and I think not having blue-tinted shades on all the mercs helped with this a little bit lol.
