CTD joining SW server

Just about to join a SW game (entering lobby) and the lobby appeared, but no merc icons or players listed (the 3 merc images were just white rectangles). 5 seconds later the game crashed with this:

Turns out the game was still running… I can hear the game playing in the background (gunfire etc). but the UI is completely locked out.

The console works though and typing ‘disconnect’ leaves me with a permanent ‘loading’ screen with the spinning dorito

This is pretty much exactly what I have been experiencing the past few weeks but rarely. And then today it happened 4-5 times in a row. Sometimes I get the coherent UI thing pop up, but usually I don’t. Sometimes I can play the next round, but then have to restart after that. But today I just loaded into games many times to have the UI completely unresponsive just like in that screenshot, without the mercs or players listed.
