What Type of Squad do you like playing?

(g00n) #1

I been having a few random player games lately and I see more are concentrating on a specific type of squad, so was curious to see if others thought the same. The poll is to see what the community likes doing. You can choose more than one category on this poll. I dont believe in stereotyping to much, for players can change depending on friends or moods.

Categories:
•Over powered means that you prefer to use a team that takes every advantage to control a game map. Winning is more fun beating weaker teams that either don’t fit map or disadvantage in weaponry or medical help. Find this type of player not much fun to play with.
•Specialist squad is playing toons that fit your style, or a map type. It also can be for specialty games with friends like all Melee weapons , all shotguns. Worry about using them all the time, find boring playing same squads. Also limits your knowledge to use all available toons or weapons.
•Sniper Medical combos are dominant class types for some player having range and absorb damage. If you have Gus squirting helps in movement as well.
•Mixture is having a broad range of classes or types (light, mediums, heavies) Usually dosnt stick with same combo but adjust them.
•Toys! yep extra stuff to out number opposition, mines, C4,UAV, Rocket, MG turrets, Portable shield.
•Pot luck, click random to all your toon collection and what ever weapon they are carrying at time. Try this with random map and player and you really can challenge your self.
•Clones. Yep exploit there advantages, Daves grenade Battery, Megans mines everywhere, Madelines UAV etc
•Collection. This more reflects the limited choice new players have over veterans, they dont have luxury of choice, so pick a team they have all the time till they can afford to upgrade.
•Heavies or lights? Some players like the quickness, or the absorbing Heavies. I dont think I ever played a player with only mediums in there team

Im a type of player who enjoys trying out different squads each game. I used to field a type of mix squad when I only had limited collection of toons to choose from and kept at it all the time, now I just choose what I feel.
Something about me:
I do not use Clones
I usually have a rule of thumb about having more commandoes and engineers than medic and snipers, eg 5 toon max of 2 or 6 toon squad max 3 sniper/medic.
I dont have Juans or Fryers probably never will till I feel they are balanced enough to use.
Love Melee battles, but will only do if player agrees as well.

Every squad I field is overpowered, just maybe not in my hands.
Whenever I build a squad, it is tailored to my style.

I like lights.
I have nothing against clones or at least twins
I like some diversity
Sometimes I tailor my squad to the map.

I have a few standard squads that I like to play, partly because they are comfortable.
Dave, Kate, Madam, Ivan
Dave, Kate, Madam, Megan
Dave, Kate, Madam, Madam
Dave, Gus, Ivan, Madam
Dave, Gus, Carlos, Madam

In 14 pt randoms I rarely use a medic.

I like to use underrated squads
Gives you a perfect “surprise”
and actually it is quite a feeling to win against standard-squads

My most prefered builds are :

lockdown builds, where you somehow manage to make it a pain for the opponent to come any closer to you (turrets, mines, c4, UAV + positioning)

I often place mines and c4 here exactly where / when the opponent may actually see it, it’s less of a surprise but more of a pain for him to even think about moving there… at least some opponents tell me that
but these nearly always needs you to be first in order to place everything.

trap builds where you simply set up a trap, or lure the opponent out … sometimes even willingly sacrifice one or more of your toons to totally nuke the opponent

used toons for that are… everything with a easy2use Push / pull, massive surprise dmg and sometimes simple dmg-dealers.
Mainly Dave, Kate, SUDS, Megan, Gus

and the new kind just runnin’ here
setups that aren’t build with any powerfull combination or toons
these guys surprise the enemy with totally random and direct attacks
often without a single healer
and try to get the advantage by utilizing control-abilities and pure dmg output

used toons are Ivan, Tito, SUDS , Pete, LaHacque… sometimes juan and Kate (for the annoying-factor)

no matter what size, I always play with the maximum amount of toons … I believe toons are stronger and give a great versatility compared to stronger weapons

My all-time-favourit setup were
Captain - Juan - Gus
Captain - Archie - Archie - Dave - Kate
Captain - Juan - Juan - Gus - Gus - Gus

but now it is more like
Captain - Suds - anything (mainly gus or dave for the push)
Captain - LaHacque - LaHacque - Dave - Kate / Captain - Ivan - Gus - LaHacque - Archie
Captain - Suds - LaHacque - Ivan - Gus - Gus

I really can recommand playing SUDS moreoften. he is cheap, he is fast, he has the strongest ability in the whole game.
he is a little like Hannibal Smith “The game ‘One step ahead’ is not a plan, kid. 2 to 3 steps ahead, do destroy your opponent’s turn before he can execute it. This is a plan!”
or at least he teaches you to become like him

the c4 may be used right at the beginning (e.g. 2nd to 3rd turn on market)
or may be laid down to lure the enemy in when you’re 2 toons behind him
or whenever it fits. just make sure the enemy does not detect it with his commander ( happens too often if you don’t take care)

  • Suds and Dave can NOT be nagged in any form for being “overpowered” or too expensive for beginners.
a friend of mine just started the game and managed to get suds in the first hour of playing

I actually wonder if there is any common tayloring for each map

interesting so far mixed the most popular. Funny thing is on random Multiplayer I mainly get to play uber cool and specialist squads.

That’s because that is the main build you get to see in-game. It’s sad to say that this poll does not translate reality. Either people think they are mixing and don’t consider it “uber cool” or simply reluctant to admit, or just maybe the ones you find are not voting.

TBH, I thought more people would go “pot luck challenge”. It’s very fun. A little embarrassing if/when you are utterly crushed, though. :o

The poll is just an indication, I never seen a poll truely deal with reality. Only a few people have participated so far (18 on posting this) and I know a few probably didnt realise you can click more than one choice, and yes it all depends on how voters honestly choose :stuck_out_tongue:

Yeah I love doing this. Having a squad totally not suited to a map is challenge.

I like to see when playing friend challenges totally cut out what map used when Challenger goes random maps.So they cannot prepare squad. Ive played against some more than one game clicking repeat. Some do not ever want to go first.

Also does multiplayer actually go against other players who also chose random? I some how feel it only decides what map you going on and then pairs you up with player whom haven’t been accepted yet. So player deciding on map choice with squad still can play against a random map/squad player.

Random is quite challenging but it needs opposition also to be in same boat.

:o Umm, what ? No… I wasn’t one of those. Shut up.

No, it doesn’t. I’m fairly certain MP doesn’t match random vs random. I keep clashing with pre-arranged squads dedicated to certain maps: coughOLDTOWNwithfryersandsuchcough. But yes it’d be more interesting if your opponent was also in the same situation as you, instead of having to face a handicap. No matter how satisfying it can be to win with allegedly inferior squads.

Randomising the toons is also part of the process. Of course, you then have to adapt their weapons the way you see fit (and how SP’s fit), for more randomisation would be too-- random. XD
