ET server files for VPS

(SadGasm) #1

Hi, i have a VPS and im using Linux linux debian 7 64-bit and i need to know how to install et server files on my vps. I use GameCP as my game control panel. I also have a question on how to make the server use dual master list patch ( 2.55 / 2.60b ) …

I’m afraid I have no experience with GameCP so here’s just a quick example on how to install the files.

You should create the folder where you’re going to install the game in before executing the executable.

mkdir /home/USER_HERE/et
wget http://filebase.trackbase.net/et/full/et260b.x86_full.zip
unzip et260b.x86_full.zip
./et260b.x86_keygen_V03.run

When it asks for a path, just type in /home/USER_HERE/et.

If you need to send updates to both lists, you probably need ET 3.0.0 or similar.

Just also to say,
To enter those commands from you’re pc to the VPS terminal, you may want to use putty.

Running server on VPS = lag server. VPS is shared resources and your server might lag. Find good GPS and host your server with them.

FYI: Don’t run server as root. Run it under different user.

Yeah i use putty for ssh  … the path is /usr/local/gcp/installs/et and also i think that the GameCP makes a user for each service i make over the game panel.

Yeah i know VPS is bad but i took it for first months so i can test if i still have linux skills and test the requirements i need.
Thank you guys, you helped alot ^^

I guess you’ve never ran a server on a VPS or had a bad provider. I’ve ran several for many years and never had any problems.

Had tried 3 provides few years back when I was running my own clan. Been few years though. Running a server is hit or miss on VPS. If other VPS on same machine uses more resources and if it’s OpenVPS you are seeing lag big time.

Then went on with GSP providers and had no issues. I always opted for smaller GSP’s cos they care for customers and also work with you compare to big ones.

Few years is quite a lot. CPUs and other technologies have improved a lot since. Typical usage of a VPS is a LAMP stack which usually doesn’t consume that much CPU.

I suppose you mean OpenVZ? Got one of those, no lag.

ET doesn’t require that much CPU so if you get a VPS from a decent provider there shouldn’t be any problems.

Doesn’t require but use a lot :stuck_out_tongue:

I don’t think you’re going to run an ET client on a VPS.

Yup, but server itself have loops  Would be strange to have a great diff between these two, at least I expect; It was to illustrate the fact a 10 years old game can still eat some resources even if can run the same with less

(ETJump-Zero) #12

If the server were to run unlimited times per second it’d cause the time to go faster or slower in every server depending on CPU load and the CPU itself. Read how game loops work. http://gameprogrammingpatterns.com/game-loop.html

Here’s a typical example of ET server CPU usage when it’s empty (Intel Xeon E3 1230v3). Increases around half a % per player.

Sure if you want to run a mod that does prime number calculations every 5th minute for a minute you might end up using 100 % CPU sometimes but I don’t think most of us do.

Plus even if it’d work as you think it does (Consumes as much CPU as it can, every single millisecond) you could always limit the CPU since based on your logic it can run on less than what it is using. (Which is true as long as it doesn’t take longer than the frametime to complete everything that is needed.)

If you want to run an ET server on a VPS, feel free as long as the VPS provider isn’t overselling the nodes.

im using the latest silent and nq mod on my 2 servers and have no laggs. VPS is located in germany and i am from Bosnia

any recomendations for VPS host to an ET server?

I know I’m a little late. But if anyone is still questioning what a good VPS is, I would suggest DigitalOcean.https://www.digitalocean.com/
