Psionic Merc.

A merc, to screw up your mind and your aim!

Two main abilities.

-Mass concussion wave (to be usefull for a team)
-“Straight sight” invisibility. Enemy can see you only with side-view, i.e. by turning away crosshair. That is the closer your crosshair to Psionic - the less you see him. I am not talking about Phantom-inviz, but more of video nosie - blind spot.

Weapons: Close range scalpel

Yes! I can see how characters specialising in crowd control can add enormous value to the game. I think people have problems with ‘magic’ in the game. But that’s just flavour, these abilities can easily be done with sci-fi technology.

Besides, that’s the type of thing SD will need to resort to anyway to keep making meaningful characters.

Wtf this is not Saints Row

Arthur C. Clarke’s third “law” of prediction

“Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic”

But seriously, I wouldn’t like such kind of crowd control; concussion grenades are already annoying enough. The emphasis should still be on shooting other people with your main and side-weapon and not so much on gimmickery. There must be a way to give the mercs intersting and character defining skills, without detracting the gameplay too much from what XT is suppossed to be in the first place; a FPS game.

There’s something very interesting about having the player himself being the centre of an AoE effect. However, if it was a lethal suicide then the whole thing would be too binary. Players don’t really have a choice.

The concussion effect however, that’s different. The concussion effect should have a wide range and daze all hostiles as well as the player himself.

A short charge up time would be great as well. You can make this binary, so the player starts the sequence, he will start to glow so everyone is alerted of what’s going on and within 1 or 2 seconds the blast happens.

Even more fun is to make it a gradual ability. The blast wave and the strength of his ‘mind blast’ increase the longer he holds the charge. So it can go from a 1 second dud to a 5 second cataclysmic blast. Because the player will end up with a concussion and wasting his cooldown he will always be torn between getting a fast effect or a delayed strong effect.

Mind games.

We alrdy have 2 wierdos. lets make more of them.
Rhino-Phantom-Psionic-Golem

Fantastic four!

Sry, but a glowing body? That really sounds like magic stuff to me. Even though I get what you mean with that, I’d suggest something a little more subtle; like for example a visibly vibrating body, or the ground around the player would vibrate, you know, just like when Superman(or, to be more precise, the Man of Steele) would startup his “engines”, to fly up in the sky.
But again, even though such an ability would bear at least some kind of tactical skill, it wouldn’t involve any kind of shooting skills, and resembles more of a noob-tube, than anything else in the game.

Glowing suit, backpack or helm. Just something that indicates that serious crap is about to unfold.

Speaking of crowd control and team kills, I want the flame thrower back

A tear gas hose then.

here
there are several moments in this horror short where we can kinda “see” the killer. but he is mostly video noise.

scenes at:
9-25
11-55
15-07 (mostly)

i dont think we need this extreme noise, but something like this.

You know… the whole radiation/fallout setting… Why not just go the X-Men route and make up powers and have the game be fun at least? More abilities, more science fiction tech, more x-men stuff… just make it up, whatever… just make sure you don’t limit yourself with a overly serious setting. The point of a game is to be fun and interesting…

Right now, most of these characters make me fall asleep at the keyboard…

Sounds like it would just be annoying and shouldn’t be in a game.

Assuming SD introduces some sort of ability unlock system, a non-lethal grenade that randomly steals an ability, in addition to the ones you already have.

I’m thinking along the lines of Priest in Hearthstone.

(tokamak) #15

That ability would be a bit convoluted or ‘soupy’. However the scope in which you’re thinking is exactly what we need right now.

A ‘delusional paranoia’ grenade that will permanently make all friends look like enemies and all enemies look like friends until respawn.

Even with FF off that would still be an incredibly annoying hallucination to have. Even for players who know what’s up it’s going to be tough to turn that mental switch. And yet it fully relies on the skill of the player. A godlike player should be able to continue as normal, but any lesser being will feel shafted.

It could also be a temporary effect but then the grenade visuals would need to be subtle so players who don’t pay attentio can’t notice.

That ability would be a bit convoluted or ‘soupy’

It can be the old covert stealing uni ability remixed as - stealing class, and all earnt upgrades. Less soup.
In addition to that, the “victim” loses those upgrades until the ability stealer gets fragged by the victim.

So you have a hunt/hunted dynamic going on. If XP indeed rewards the best player, then youre always going to keep tabs on the best player to maximise the amount of stuff you get to steal or deny the opposing team… at the risk of not having those assets for very long or having less opportunities to steal them because the target always stays alive
