Engineer character idea: Slow exoskeleton.

(tokamak) #1

We’ve been throwing this idea around before. The idea of a demolition/bomb/juggernaught suit for the engineer. A hard shell that allows the engineer to take a huge beating. Having a near unstoppable player with (VERY) weak offensive capabilities is an enormous tactical asset. You can use that player to put him into spaces you want to control and he’ll be the class best suited to do objectives.

The big costs should be offensive power and speed. IE a turtle/tank class.

There’s one big problem with having a class permanently encased in a high-armour/low offfense/low speed suit: It’s utility is highly situational. Very few people are willing to play a class that trudged through inactive parts of the map to bring the suit into action. And even then it’s only a matter of context of how far the class can be of any use.

SO:

Therefore the class should be able to switch in and out of his suit.

“wait, what!?”

Yes, the player starts out as a normal engineer. A bit like proxy but bigger and at normal speed. Including a decent shotgun. The only ability the engineer has is the option to put on his suit.

Initiating the suit switch will immobilise the player and make him unable to do anything for say, 5-10 seconds (subject to balance). Then the suit is on and the player will move at 30% speed. Will only be able to use a side arm and engineering equipment, but will also enjoy a health increase and damage reduction (80-90% reduction or something).

If he wants to get out of the suit and back into ‘normal’ mode with ordinary speed health and his shotgun then he’ll have to initiate the undress sequence, which will again be another 5 to 10 seconds.

In this way we have a character that is able to be a huge asset to the team IF SUPPORTED without the risk of ever becoming a huge burden.

And don’t worry about the dressing animation, this can be something complex or something simple and abstract. The point is that he needs to freeze for a couple of seconds.

And if I may be so free, name suggestion: Hurt (from Hurt Locker).

I like the idea of a exoskeleton on a certain player. I would like to see a push ability then. ET had push whenever a person got close and it really helped collisions. With if this merc has a exoskeleton with a type of push punch that deals damage but also pushing the person away.

Maybe upgrades for the push punch such as a stun, slow, flash, increase in spread blaa blaa blaa. Hundreds of ideas, but the push damage punch would be sweet for a class.

Collision is still somewhat broke so a push punch for all class I vote for right now! Just to test until collision and anti lag is fixed.

Also, please please please reduce spread and lower some damages… Just for testing or in this closed beta. You can go back the this values once add-ons are put into the game. Or dont go back and dont do add-ons but spread is too high!

Very bad habits are starting to form with this game. I find myself being lazy with my aim. Almost setting my cross-hair to an area and pulling off the trigger because I know 10 of the next bullets are going to hit so whats the point. This is not a skill move to reduce spread this is down right lazyness and I find myself getting bored with the gun fights. Like O darn he got me… Really… I never like to get killed but this game has desensitized me so much that I dont give a crap anymore because I have no control of an out come sometimes. Sad!

A shove would be a nice melee move. Low damage but high kinetic force applied to the victim.

This guy is what this game needs. A brawler to shake things up and something that players can use as cover.

(Glottis-3D) #4

This guy will WILL do the objects. if he is able to plant/hack/deliver while in suit, ofc.

(tokamak) #5

Only if his team backs him up. If you move at 20-30% normal speed then it doesn’t matter how tough you are, you will be a sitting duck.

A huge boon in this guy is that you can make his weaknesses and strengths incredibly extreme. You can set them apart way further than with any other character. This in turn allows to experiment with how far you can push a certain specialism in the game.

Just wondering if it’s worth creating a class for the lemming obj player… I wouldn’t see any use for this outside of the obj, which is a little off-putting to me. Something with more flexible application outside of the obj itself would be better.

(spookify) #7

I agree but every class doing OBJ is even more lame… SD would need to make this class correctly. I dont like the idea of a sitting duck plus and a exo suit makes you strong and fast IRL.

I still think engys should be the only people doing objectives and we can protect them however if they have an exo suit to push, punch, speed and strength boost and jump then protecting them will be easier. However being a bullet shield should not be the case. IRL it might deflect a few bullets but the person inside is just as substitutable as any other person. That is with the current unclassified exo suit. Does the military have a suit that is classified and super bad ass yes I am sure but remember its not as bad ass as a crysis suit yet. We need 50 more years for something like that.

This guy will probably be more frequently used to hold defensive positions or to break through bottlenecks. Objectives are a strength but his main virtue is the ability to brawl, to stir up impasses or to create them. It’s a turtle that gets to control space in this game.

so this bulky, slow moving character with a sidearm will break through bottlenecks? yeah no. he’ll get gunned down, and spammed while he’s lumbering forward. that’s what a bottleneck is

(Glottis-3D) #11

c’mon you saw the video! even Legolas couldnt stop him!

(Protekt1) #12

I’m just going to throw this out there, I imagined him with a short ranged flamethrower.

Why on earth isn’t gta5 on pc yet… ROCKSTAR!!!

(tokamak) #15

Soaking up all the fire for his team-mates while doing so. Seriously this guy should be receiving xp for getting hit.

(Protekt1) #16

His ability could be some kind of expulsion wave generated by his suit when he stomps the ground and what it does is knocks grenades and explosives away from him. It doesn’t deal damage to anyone or knock players back cause that would just be annoying.

(Nail) #17

I’m scared there’s a mech with “magic”, oh wait, I have a rocket launcher, I hear scrap goes for $0.11/lb

(tokamak) #18

Just a shove should suffice. His main job is to suck up damage. And if he’s not sucking up damage because the other team is not shooting at him any longer then he gets to be annoying by pushing everyone around.

(Glottis-3D) #19

his name gonna be Golem?

(Protekt1) #20

Annoying is bad. Protecting people from grenades or displacing airstrikes is good.
