Please Read: Upcoming Dirty Bomb Name Change and A New Partnership

(Locki) #1

We’ve got some cool news in the coming weeks and months in the world of Dirty Bomb, and I want to give you a quick update on two significant announcements that lie ahead.

Nexon America will operate Dirty Bomb in North America, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand

Unlike our previous games, Dirty Bomb is going to be an on-going service. That means our involvement will continue well after release, and we’ll bring you regular game updates, new features and functionality, and content updates. To achieve this vision and at the same time bring you the best possible quality of service near you, we’re partnering with operators around the world. If you’re interested, you can find more information on our operations approach in this post by badman.

We’re very excited to be partnering with Nexon America to bring Dirty Bomb to North America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico and Turkey, and you’ll be able to freely play with and against any other players within those regions. Nexon have a massive amount of experience in the free-to-play space, and run several successful games already. They are extremely excited about Dirty Bomb and want to do whatever they can to help us make the game a success.

Nexon will be lending their free-to-play expertise which we’ve agreed will focus on keeping the game free-to-win (not pay-to-win), and together we’ll bring it to a big and avid fanbase in all of their territories, provide the kind of massive high performance server-infrastructure that we desperately need, plus trustworthy and secure payment gateways, just in case you do spend money!

They’ll manage front-line customer support, and we’ll be there too to help with issues that get escalated. To be clear, Nexon share our Anti-Pay-to-Win stance for the game, and we’ll continue to have full creative control over the game, its gameplay, and features. I must say though, Min (their CEO) is already pretty good at DB already… I’ve loved working and socialising with him – he’s a huge hardcore PC gamer himself, and also nuts about board and card games. His alias is MoneyPenny, so now you know who to shoot!

Dirty Bomb is becoming Extraction

What most people don’t know is that Dirty Bomb’s original name was Extraction. We were nervous about trademarking it, hence the rename just before the closed-alpha DB. With Nexon’s help, we now feel confident we can secure the worldwide rights to the name, so we’re changing it back!
There’ll be a brand-new Extraction teaser website launching alongside the partnership announcement mentioned earlier.
Share your thoughts!

I’m telling you all first, but please keep this secret! We’ll announce the Nexon partnership in a couple of days, and will debut the game with them at PAX in Seattle. You guys know me pretty well, so feel free to post what you like (positive or negative!), and I or badman will tell you anything we can that won’t cause our bankruptcy.

Mhh not sure what to think about it. So we will have different games depending on our location? CIS guys cant play vs EU/NA/AUS/NZL guys? Why did you create WarChest and fireteam when DB now is run by a 3rd party? Why change the name? It’s already known as Dirty Bomb and now you want to change the name?
On the other hand its not the worest to use some knowledge from other companies regarding the f2p market. Before judging I’ll wait and see how it will be.

The name change is a shock.

Does this mean that you guys will split a community before the game even launches? I mean I can tell my russian clanmates that I can’t play with them?

About the name change. When I first heard about Dirty Bomb I must admit that the name didn’t appeal to me at all, but neither does Extraction tbh. I would rather have a mysterious (bad ass) name that would attract my attention.

(badman) #5

To be honest, Dirty Bomb has not had a massive amount of exposure just yet - we’ve been intentionally keeping it low while we run the Closed Alpha. We don’t think this will pose a problem.

We’re investigating ways to make cross-territory play happen - it’s a complex beast.

I think that many RTCW/ET/ETQW Players know already DB as DB. Not sure how many in total, so we will see. I’m just not a fan of huge renaming

It wasn’t a choice we made lightly… also, I would like to throw ‘Xt’ out there as the new abbreviation for the game.

(iwound) #9

Dont you mean ET.

(badman) #10

I see what you did there ;o

(Kl3ppy) #11

So, do we get now one DB hoodie and one Extraction hoodie?

(Seanza) #12

Wow, unexpected name change!

So Dirty Bomb has gone from being a truly indie title from Splash Damage to Extraction, an on-going service created by Splash Damage and run by other companies. Quite disappointed in this major change in direction, though I do believe the intent for this to be indie from the get-go was there. Shame you guys discovered along the way that it wasn’t going to be as lucrative as first hoped.

For me, the biggest attraction about the game (2nd to class-based objectives) was the fact that you guys were going to be doing it entirely independently, nobody to come up against when you wanted to make a change in your project, nobody but the fans to consider when developing your game. After the massacre of the SD name with BRINK, I felt DB was the game that was going to rebuild the brand. Now the 2 big things that were hooking me in are dwindling away. You say you’ll still have full creative control, but your creativity will now have a new party to consider.

Makes me sad since I saw so much potential for you guys to finally get the recognition you deserve :frowning:

Nevertheless, I appreciate your upfront honesty with us. I hope this trait is something that remains

edit: How will this affect community sites like EvacZone? Will the logo etc. change? Will the name EvacZone still fit in with the theme of Extraction?

Ah Locki long time no hear!

Nexon America sounds exciting, though I also have a few questions:

  • What about the Russian part of the world? Is there a possibility that we can play with them?
  • Can we only buy servers from Nexon America?

To be honest I wasn’t very happy about the name “DirtyBomb” when I first joined this alpha. So I’m very glad and yes I even expected a name change somewhen. “Extraction” sounds much better.

Sounds good. I would keep “Xt”.

(INF3RN0) #14

This should be fine. Nexon is a well known name, and since SD maintains full control we will only have the server lag to blame Nexon. Extraction is a nice name, but no more innuendos to be had haha. If only Pax wasn’t right in the middle of my summer finals I’d totally stop by grrr.

I lol this smiley ^^
Not that I realy like the new (old) name (tbh)as for DB story as it is now …well it will depend of the incoming backstory ,but Id always thought DB was not a good choice name it was making the title too restrictive for furtur narrative.
Changing name will bring critics …but better now than after .
As for Nexon ,glad your relation with their CEO is very good …sound all good except for the split community …you’re the Boss! we counting on you

(.FROST.) #16

I liked “Dirty Bomb”, but I already spoke out my concern with the title. Especially these days it can be a bit missleading and problematic when a game has such a title; especially when it comes to clothing, merchandising, or simple PR of said game. Add to that, that DB is a FPS game and you’d have the new source of all evil in the world for the next 10 years, just like we had that with CS for the last 15 years or so.

You guys know what I mean. Some peeps even became obsessed with the idea, that the September 11th attackers played MSFS. Extraction sounds much cleaner and more technical, nobody can have anything against that. But then again…

(Mustang) #17

To me it sounds not quite unique enough to make people ask “what is that?”

Faster Than Light, Minecraft, Hearthstone, etc. are more… sit-up “what did you just say?”

Whereas Extraction is more… “guess he’s just making up silly words for taking out the garbage again”.

It might grow on me, but right now I’m underwhelmed and think it could do with a second word, e.g. Extraction Forces, or something.

(Rex) #18

Extraction Territory?

(rookie1) #19

Agreed
Extraction DB :stuck_out_tongue:
Why you didnt ask us few sugestions maybe youd had come up with an Epic name
Now mb it will be restrictive to Extractions …incoming Lots of Helicos for multiples extractions in all futur XTrackAction :stuck_out_tongue:
ps agreed with Frost that to i was thinking

(Dragonji) #20

The name change is really surprising, I wouldn’t expect it, but is it better than Dirty Bomb? I hope that with a new name it will at least be easier to write some convincing backstory.

What he said.

PS. I’d love to see easter eggs that refer to the previous title inside DB… ekhm… Xt
