fail to launch

(Nail) #1

funny thing, I downloaded Brink during the free weekend, game installed and worked perfect, I recently got a retail copy and after install, no joy, only thing that’s changed is my monitors, went from 2-19" CRTs to a 24 and 22 " LED. Tried deleting local content and re-installing from disc and then same and downloaded it from Steam, still just crashes, what am I doin wrong ?

(Commander_Keen) #2

Search the forums for the location of the config file. Steam puts it in an app numbered folder delete or rename that config file and see if it resets whatever setting went wrong. Most likely the refresh rate or something is different between the 2 monitors?

(Nail) #3

tried that, no luck

Fails when trying to initialise the render system, which ties up with the change in hardware.

Could it be trying to load in a resolution that isn’t supported by either the game or the hardware?

listmodes gives you the full list of resolutions supported by the game (see below). The ones unsupported by your hardware are marked as being unavailable in fullscreen. For windowed mode, you can only set a custom resolution of dimensions of a power of 2. I.e. you can’t set 1234 x 567.

Check your display settings (right-click windows desktop) for your native resolution. Find the mode id for your native resolution in the list of r_modes below:

Mode 0: 320x240
Mode 1: 400x300
Mode 2: 512x384
Mode 3: 640x480
Mode 4: 800x600
Mode 5: 1024x768
Mode 6: 1152x864
Mode 7: 1280x720
Mode 8: 1280x800
Mode 9: 1280x1024
Mode 10: 1440x900
Mode 11: 1600x900
Mode 12: 1600x1024
Mode 13: 1600x1200
Mode 14: 1680x1050
Mode 15: 1920x1080
Mode 16: 1920x1200
Mode 17: 2560x1600

Mode 25: 1400x1050

* You’ll want to ensure that no 3rd-party config files are overriding the change you are about to make

[li]Go into your Steam Library, and right-click on Brink[/li][li]Click ‘Properties’[/li][li]Click ‘Set launch options…’[/li][li]Paste (or append) the following: +set r_mode ## (where ## is the r_mode id of your native resolution)[/li][li]Run Brink from Steam and then manually set r_mode ## via the console, so it saves out to your save/config file[/li][/ol]

went to single monitor, deleted Brink again, re-installed from disc, verified files, still poo
how can switching monitors cause this much grief ?

do I need to disconnect from Steam cloud to make changes ?

(Crispy) #7

Steam Cloud shouldn’t be overwriting these settings as we store these locally. But the first-party config could be overwriting your changes! :stuck_out_tongue:

In …\Steam\userdata#user#\22350\local\base edit brinkconfig.cfg in a text editor, such as Notepad.

The following variables affect your video settings:

seta r_mode "#"
seta r_fullscreen "#"

Remove the variables you added to the command line in Steam and edit the above values instead. If that doesn’t work, try manually setting a custom aspect ratio:

The following variables are only invoked if you set the r_mode to custom (off the top of my head, I believe this is done with a value of “-1”)

seta r_customWidth "#"
seta r_customHeight "#"
seta r_customAspectRatioH "#"
seta r_customAspectRatioV "#"

E.g.

seta r_mode "-1"
seta r_customWidth "1680"
seta r_customHeight "1050"
seta r_customAspectRatioH "16"
seta r_customAspectRatioV "10"

Alternatively, you could try renaming this file temporarily so that Brink generates a default version of the file the next time you boot.

thanks, will try when i’m back in town
