Brink crashes to desktop

Hello,
I had posted messages in another thread about a problem I have with ambiant occlusion which doesn’t work. I open a new one for the more general problems I have with the game.

I have an ATI Radeon HD 5770 graphic card. With most ATI drivers, I have random crashes to desktop. The game works well with drivers 11.6 but I have crashes or freezes with 11.7, 11.8, 11.9, 11.11 and now 11.12. I have upgraded to 11.12 tonight and had three crashes in less than two hours of play (Brink quits to desktop, without any error message or information). As suggested in the previous thread, I tested a bit of the Catalyst AI options. I’ve tested:

• textures filtering quality to “high quality” + enable surface format optimization (best setting)
• textures filtering quality to “performance” without enable surface format optimization (lowest setting)
  It doesn’t change anything. In previous drivers, I could disable Catalyst AI completely but it doesn’t seem to be the case anymore.

Also, I’ve tried ambiant occlusion with this latest driver and still have the problem with really dark parts and strange colors (I posted captures in the other thread, if they can’t be transfered here, I’ll post new ones).

What can I try to fix the problem?

Is there a Brink log that I can check? I didn’t relaunch the game after the last crash in the case there is a log file that would be overwritten.

It says that it previously crashed on some directshow test but I don’t think I had run it before (since my last Windows installation).

Also, I’ve tested my RAM with Memtest just in case and it doesn’t seem to have problems.

I have a few .mdmp files in C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\brink that looks like crash reports but they don’t include tonight’s crashes (as they’re sorted by date; I have files for 15/8, 3/9, 6/9, 20/9, 29/11, 30/11 and 12/12). Are they of any help to you?

I added command line options to generate a log file when Brink crashes. It crashed again tonight. Am I supposed to find the log in the Brink folder (C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\brink) ? If that’s the case, I don’t get one…

EDIT: we finally played during ~ 2 h 30 to 3 h and I got seven crashes to desktop! It’s beginning to be quite annoying.

Any idea before I get back to Catalyst 11.6 and get a stable system for Brink again?

On first look, I don’t see problems related to graphic issues (like OpenGL errors or such). Lots of various warnings but I don’t think they’re relatedto the crashes.As I have a few files for tonight, I think I’ll check the folder next time it crashes so as to keep the correct log (tonight, I restarted Brink after each crash and I’m not sure each file I have corresponds to the moment I restarted the game).

I have ATI HD 5850, Windows 7 - 32bit.

I think it started happening a few days ago, after upgrading to the latest Catalyst drivers 11.12, before it all worked great and perfectly!!
I’m not sure which was the version of Catalyst before, maybe this 11.6.

I get back to Catalyst 11.6 and get a stable system for Brink again, but this is not a solution because other games require the latest drivers !!!

I did too yesterday as I have no feedback from SD. Fortunately, I don’t have games that required recent drivers but I might in the future and this is not a propre solution.

Other players of my team seem to have issues with ATI cards too. I suggested them to try the 11.6 Catalyst drivers. If I have more info about this (i.e. if they can play Brink without crashing), I’ll report here.

You mentioned in your email that you are running with Mumble. The Mumble overlay has been known to have fatal compatibility issues with Brink. Can you try running without Mumble and seeing if your crashes persist?

Well, I’ve removed the Mumble overlay long ago as it indeed had issues in the way that Brink crashed immediately on start. When I updated to a newer version of Catalyst drivers (11.9 or 11.11, I’m not sure), I tried to reactivate the overlay in order to see if it worked better but it didn’t really: while it didn’t crash on startup with newer Catalyst drivers, I had graphical issues with the overlay flickering and being unusable. Since then, I disabled it again and never reactivated it.

Do you think there can be issues between Brink and Mumble with its overlay disabled?

Quickest way to check would be to run with Catalyst 11.11, having exited Mumble completely beforehand, and seeing if you get the frequency of crashes you were getting before.

You could try completely uninstalling Mumble from your computer, removing all your graphics drivers and completely reinstalling them.

But first, some users have noted better performance on the new Catalyst 12.1 drivers. You could give those a try.

Tonight, updated to 12.1beta, quit Mumble, launched Brink… and crashed after 10 minutes.

Same as usual : back to desktop without any info.

I need you to produce a log file that may provide more clues. Here’s how to do it:
1.Go into your Steam Library, and right-click on Brink
2.Click ‘Properties’
3.Click ‘Set launch options…’
4.Paste the following: +set logFileName “CrashDuringGP_$Y.$M.$D_$h.$m.$s.log” +set logfile 2
5.Run Brink from Steam and quit as soon as you have produced the issue.
6.Retrieve the logfile:1.Go to …\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata#steamid#\22350\local\base
2.Find the file called CrashDuringGP_xxxx.log
3.Paste the contents of the log file within CODE tags

Yep, but I sent my logs directly to Crispy instead of pasting them here. But I don’t think they’re really useful (checked them quickly and didn’t see anything really specific in them).

I can not believe that this problem can not be solved!!!
The big problem is to use the old drivers only for Brink. With this the old drivers (11.6) I have a problem with Rage and MW 3.
Maybe we need to directly contact ATI support for this problem… :rolleyes:

Well, for a start it might be useful to know what major changes have been made between 11.6 and 11.7 (if we can narrow down the problem to this update specifically, although it may depend of other things too). I’ve checked the changelogs but they’re not precise enough. Maybe SD, as a developer, can get more technical info from ATI/AMD?
