Linux Server and other open questions

(Suxxess) #1

Can you tell us the kind of your dedicaded servers?

Like CoD => One selected provider in the world
Like Battlefield => Some selected providers in the world
Like ETQW => a free downloadable dedicated server
Like CS => a free downloadable dedicated “LINUX” server

And exist a difference between “ranked” and “unranked” servers?

Which tool do you use for your Anticheat protection?
Punkbuster, VAC or an other tool?

It is possible to play in a league game with the integrated tools?
(Exist a gui for map restart, vote, setup the player slots, set a password, an useable console ingame +warmup time and a ready to go function and so on?)

Do you plan a map tool or a mod tool?
Could everybody get the Psycho-Packs or the Spec Ops-Packs ingame later?
(With a levellup)

Do you plan to program more DLC’s in the future?

(JeP) #2

I think I read that all the servers will be ranked.
The anti-cheat protection is VAC, as the game is link to steam.

The preco packs aren’t supposed to be available later.
Even if they are, don’t you think that giving it away would break
all the interest for stores to have exclusivity on them ?
Like ETQW => a free downloadable dedicated server
Like CS => a free downloadable dedicated “LINUX” server
What, didn’t etqw have dedi linux server?

(DarkangelUK) #4

yeah everything is ranked, hence being able to progress offline/coop/vs etc.

(Crytiqal) #5

CS dedicated servers also runs fine on windows

(Diablo85) #6

I think he mentioned Linux servers specificly because many people who run servers from their own dedicated box use linux for that (since its much cheaper than windows).

(Suxxess) #7

Thanks for the answers.
Yes Diablo85 have right. And linux has other benefits, too. ( free, better security, less running services, no running gui, better performance usage and so on )

I hope that splashdamage release a linux server after the release of the game.
That would push the game in europa because EA and Activision use there own server systems only.
It would be an unique selling point against BF 3 and CoD 8.

CS dedicated servers also runs fine on windows

Then try to run a 10.000 FPS Server on windows  => No chance because you haven’t access to the kernel. And to run the media player to get 1.000 fps is a cheat

Even if they are, don’t you think that giving it away would break
all the interest for stores to have exclusivity on them ?

No, if you could get them later ingame then the shop buyer have an advantage in the first hours,
but the game don’t stay unfair.

(Herandar) #8

The game isn’t unfair. The pre-order bonii do not convey any sort of advantage.

(Linsolv) #9

It’s not bonii. That would only be appropriate if the word was bonius, which it’s not.

That said, it’s not an advantage, it’s a sidegrade at best and there are equivalent options available to those who do not get the preorder packs (non-preorder revolver, non-preorder SMG) from what we’ve seen.

(Suxxess) #10

I don’t like DLC because that makes games unfair or unplayable. For an example the first DLC of CoD 7. If you don’t have the maps and the server switch to a new map => player kicked! That is bad…

Or Battlefield 2 and the first Addon. Only who owns the addon got the F2000. The weapon was overpowered². The result was, you don’t need to buy the addon…but if you don’t do it…you have a handicap ingame.

Ok back to my main question. Dedicated servers?
Yes or no and we got a linux server, too?

(Crytiqal) #11

First question is already answered, second question, prolly after a few months maybe.

(zXSwordXz) #12

Maybe “WINE” could be your solution for now. I’m not sure Bethesda will dedicate budget for a linux port.

(Suxxess) #13

It’s a ID 4 Engine and ID Software ever supportetd the linux community.
Perhaps we have luck and ID Software release a linux dedicaded server for RAGE.

If that happend, then they could release the same software for Brink
But it’s an ID engine…

(Nail) #14

Rage is idtech5, Brink is idtech4, and Brink isn’t an id game

(SpawnTDK) #15

wine is a half assed soultion for servers.
and windows is the worst possible option for gameservers, i realy, realy hope there is a linux dedi.
but there is NOT ONE OFFICIAL STATEMENT about this (i haven’t found one), so i take that as a no and the community manager get’s an F.
the server faq is a joke, not to mention the very bad joke about steam.

(master[mind]) #16

This question was asked in a previous thread(the FAQ announcement thread). We go no answer regarding Linux support, so we don’t know, and we’ll be very lucky if badman or another dev member answers. It’s only a few days away, so patience…we can survive that long.

(brbrbr) #17

more interested in Linux client, than server.

(ed lolington) #18

no linux client pls 2 many hacker play then

(brbrbr) #19

same was for windows then.
90x times more “hackers” then if SD stick with win binaries.

(Hansi) #20

Good news. There will be Linux Servers. Badman confirmed this during the community event in Frankfurt:

http://www.splashdamage.com/forums/showthread.php?t=24382

“Auf meine Frage hin, ob es Linux Serverfiles geben wird, bejahte dies Steve.”
