Overdose as a remake of ET?

(General Wolfens) #1

At the moment, a group named Team Blur works on a new shooter named Overdose. This game is based on - yes, amazing! - the old engine Quake II and will be released as free2play.
Possibly, the new game Overdose could be a remake of Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. The game is postapocalyptic, but the gameplay is as the one in ET. The first pictures of the WIP-Map Stockpile look like Fueldump:

Even the features list shows that Overdose could be a new ET.

[ul][li]Class Based Team Action – With a heavy focus on Team Play, OverDose takes cooperative objective based gaming to the next level.[]Player Customisation – Player classes can be customised in a variety of physical ways, from simple features such as gear and skin tones, to clan logos, badges and the like. Every weapon has multiple configurations and attachments, allowing you to create your own arsenal that suits your needs.[]Freedom Of Movement – OverDose takes team play to the next level with “TeamActions”, allowing you to help your team mates in the field. See a ledge you can’t mantle onto? Give your friend a boost up there and then ask for a pull up. Your buddy down and waiting a medic but the area is too hot for support? Get over there and drag him out! Need to get into cover quickly while under fire? Sprint over there and slide into cover directly. OverDose takes the basic staples of the genre and turns them up to 11, the way Baby Raptor Jesus intended.[]Next Gen Engine – Built on id Software’s Quake II engine (Yes, id Tech 2) [TBG] have expanded and improved upon the original engine in every way possible to bring you such graphical features as an intense fully dynamic, unified per-pixel lighting and shadowing model with shadow mapping, parallax occlusion mapping, real time sub surface scattering, ambient occlusion and advanced post process effects.[]Full EAX Support – OverDose allows its designers TOTAL freedom over its sound design in its worlds and as such allows some crazy EAX/OpenAL effects. Sound is just as important as graphics in a game and we really have given the area huge backing.[]Fast Frame Rates – Every graphical option has several levels of quality and rather than force people with set options, OverDose allows the player amazing freedom over what they see. Gone are the days of generic graphic options ruining fun![]Full Online Ranking System – Players gain XP per game which promotes them in rank, which in turn can be used to match you up with players of similier skill. Whats more with the system being fully saved in conjunction with our master server, stats and rankings can be tracked online![]Full SDK And Tool Set – OverDose is fully behind modifications and as such we have a complete toolset built from the ground up just for OverDose modders.[]FREE – And that’s the big one. OverDose is a FREE to play indie game.

How the new reanimation of the Quake II Engine looks like, you see in this video:

At the moment, Team Blur searches still Programmers and so on to finish the game. And there is already a little Mod-Packet released.
An interesting project, we have to have an eye on this.

I signed up with these as a mapper, or so I thought, last year but left soon after, they done wonderful things with the engine granted but seems that’s all there concentrating on at the moment, not seen one bit of gameplay development since then. Makes it hard to make map for a game that doesn’t exist. (‘make it like ET map’ just doesn’t cut it) But hey, least they went to all the trouble of making wrist watch model that actually shows you your real time!!!

I’m still bit bitter that they decided to take the map me and this other guy was working on that was meant to be a fueldump style map and replaced it for fueldump copy map, strange seeing as they already have mp_beech copy map…

Hopefully they can add the gameplay part of the game soon, may consider joining again if they do, still looking for the next thing to work on.

Gameplay doesn’t sound ET ish

  • No shooting while sprinting or climbing ladders or swimming
  • No strafe/ramp/rocket jumping
  • Recoil
  • Iron sights
  • No crosshairs at all
  • High spread from certain weapons and not so much from others as you would expect
  • Aiming improves when standing still, more when crouching, even more when prone, and even more when aiming down sights
  • Very high damage from headshots (instant kill with certain weapons) and moderate damage otherwise
  • Bullet velocity and power decreases with distance or when penetrating thin/soft materials
  • And erm… well I guess that’s all I can say for now

From their forums.

Iron sighs? no crosshairs?

That’s not ET :frowning:

Though, it looks very awesome!

(Indloon) #6

Very nice, but really,I like and others like as I belive ET now look more.

(huPoo) #7

Sounds like yet another poor attempt to make a **** game in the name of ET. If there is no strafejumping, crosshairs, shooting while sprinting and ****, it will take all the speed away from the game. It will be just like counter strike, and we have already about 50 million games like that. Sure, the graphics look nice, but you shouldn’t make a game based on good looks…Start painting if you want to use your creativity for eyecandy only.

Pretty sure the game will be very popular anyway, but only because it’s free. I’ll probably try it too, because it’s free.

No one apart from the person posting here claims it to be the next ET, way to over react…

(huPoo) #9

Still though, all the other points remain. It will be slow paced boring counter strike copy, with maybe 1 or 2 new guns.

(.Chris.) #19

I’m sure they appreciate you releasing screenshots like this.

If i need to define Overdose, then i would define it as a game “in id’s Rage post-apocalyptic universum with enemy territory:quake wars gameplay” without the bugs/features of the beloved fast-pace idtech3 engine.

However the game looks interesting, especially due to the fact that it is announced as open source game, and the fact that overdose’s engine roots is based upon quake 2 and therefore that it does look ****ing good.
